Filing medical claims while abroad can be a daunting task. This guide, based on real-life experiences, aims to simplify the process and help you get reimbursed quickly.
(Please note that this guide was prepared by a military spouse and some details may vary depending on the department of your spouse)
Documentation is Key
- Record Everything: Thoroughly document every medical expense. This includes proof of payment, invoices, the date you submit your claim, the amount in both local and Canadian currency, and any follow-up communication with the insurance provider.
- Track Your Claims: Utilize the attached “Basic Medical Claims Tracking Form” to stay organized.
- Beware of Vanishing Messages: If you communicate with your insurance provider online, make sure to take screenshots of any messages as they may disappear from your history.
Payment and Reconciliation
- Expect Delays: Payments are often delayed. It can take several weeks to receive reimbursement, so patience is crucial.
- Reconcile Your Payments: Once you receive a payment, carefully compare it to your records. Ensure that the amount matches what you submitted.
- Reach Out for Clarification: If you need clarification about a payment, don’t hesitate to contact your insurance provider.
Hospital Stays and Additional Tips
- Balance Sheets: If you’re hospitalized, you may be asked to provide a balance sheet, even though it may not be used in the decision-making process.
- Persist: It may take multiple follow-ups over several weeks to receive a response from your insurance provider.
By following these tips and staying organized, you can streamline the claims process and enjoy your time abroad without financial worries.
