Another CDFN Life hack by Chris Stewart
The 6 month rule is one that’s been around for a while, but isn’t something I learned about until my 3rd post. The 6 month rule states that you should say yes to every single invitation you get for your first 6 months on post. If you’re invited to a party, go. If a social group is having a meeting, go. If colleagues at the embassy invite you out for a night of clubbing, go. Even if any of these activities aren’t your “thing”, it can sometimes lead to finding other events and people that might share similar interests. While I can’t guarantee that you’ll have fun at each and every event, you will meet people and you will get a good idea of what the social life is for diplomats and expats in your new home.
The other thing this might help with is culture shock, or at least one of the horrible side effects. It’s not uncommon (even for those of us who have been on many posts) to lock yourself up in your SQ when you get to a new post because you’re just overwhelmed. By forcing yourself to go out and meet other expats and diplomats, you might find others who are also overwhelmed, and those who can help you solve some of the simple stresses of living in this new place. After the 6 months you’ll find that you’re a little more well adjusted to the new environment and you can pick and choose what to do, but for the start of your post, force yourself to be a social butterfly.
